Grand Knight's
Letter
|
|
My Brother Knights,
Effective
July 1, I will assume
the office of Grand Knight for our Council.
I would like to take this opportunity to say
thank you to my Brother Knights
for expressing their confidence in electing me your Grand Knight for
the next
Columbian year. I am excited about this
upcoming year and will make every effort to continue our Council’s fine
tradition of providing service to our Council, Family, Youth, Church
and Community.
I would like to congratulate our past Grand Knight, Rich Kovaleski and
his
officers for a successful 2008-2009 campaign, as well as to express my
personal
appreciation to Brother Rich for all the time and effort he has
provided to me
making this transition a success. Last
but not least, a big thank you to my fellow Brother Knights who have
accepted
to serve with me as your officers for the 2009-2010 Columbian year.
As
your Grand Knight, I am
responsible for the overall welfare of our Council, observing the laws
of the
Order, of our Council, and for the successful conduct of our Council. However, the real success of our Council, as
always, depends on the level of participation of its members. There is no minimum level of participation
required; you can offer to assist your Brother Knights any way you
choose and in
the end you will feel better for having been involved in a worthy
cause. As of the writing of this
newsletter, I have
not filled the position of Lecturer. Any
Brother Knight who is interested to chair or co-chair this position,
please
contact me.
As
many of you have heard by now,
our worthy Chaplain, Father James Poumade is leaving our parish
effective July
1. At our social meeting in June, Father
Poumade spoke briefly about his memories and appreciation of the 4
years he has
been at St.Andrew. He offered to keep us
in his prayers and requested that we do likewise for him as he takes on
his new
endeavors at St. John the Beloved in McLean, Virginia. I have submitted a letter to Bishop Loverde
requesting a replacement and will announce our new Chaplain as soon as
I
receive his response.
Included
in this newsletter is a
copy of our Council’s budget covering July 2009 thru June 30, 2010. As required by our by-laws we will vote on
this budget at our next business meeting on July 7.
If anyone has any questions please attend the
July 7th meeting and present them at that time.
Additionally, any member who would like to
propose a new activity, event, fundraiser etc. may do so at any meeting
when we
reach the “New Business” portion of our meeting. As I said previously,
your
participation is always welcomed.
Happy Birthday America.
On July 4, 1776, we claimed our
independence from Britain
and Democracy was born. Independence Day
honors the
birthday of the United
States of America and the signing of
the
Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
Established in 1785 as a national day of
celebration, it is the oldest continuous celebration of its kind in the
United
States. On
July 4, Americans celebrate that freedom
and independence with barbecues, picnics
and
patriotic parades, a night of concerts and fireworks, and a reason to
fly the
American flag.
My best
wishes to all Knights and their families to enjoy the fourth of July in
whatever special way you choose.

Rosario Chechile,

If
you would like to
contribute to the work of the Council in any of these areas, please
contact the
appropriate director, or myself.
Thanks,
also, to Ed Rollins for
his work as DGK last year and for taking the time to help me understand
the
role and responsibilities of the DGK.
The
July calendar is fairly
light. Summer is upon us.
Other than our regularly scheduled meetings
and activities there’s only the State Meeting in Virginia Beach on
11-12 July for
incoming Grand Knights.
A
happy and festive 4th
of July to all our brothers and their families.
Let’s remember in prayer those who have given
so much to create and to sustain
these great United States.
Regards,
Richard

Founder's Mission
Focus on New Ads
The
March issue of
Columbia
magazine features an ad that cuts to the heart of the Knights of
Columbus insurance program. In 1882, when Father Michael J. McGivney began our
organization, his primary concern was the care of widows and
orphans. Even though 125 years have passed, we should never
forget his mission.
As you
can imagine, the Order gets lots of correspondence, but every now and
then a letter or e-mail stands out from the rest.
That is what happened back in October when the widow of a member wrote
to the Supreme Council.
While the name of the person writing has been changed
to protect her privacy, the letter appears nearly word for word.
This is what she said:
Dear
Supreme Knight
When my husband became a Knight, we were introduced to our insurance
agent, Mike Walther. We could sense right away that he thought
his career as more of a "ministry" than a sales position. Little
did I know then how much his sense of ministry would mean to me.
During our meetings, we weren't easy to persuade. Never willing
to give up, Mike worked to show us that we had a need, and he was able
to help us understand the value of being protected with life insurance.
My husband died suddenly last fall. His death was a shock to
everyone. Although from a medical standpoint it shouldn't have
happened, I guest God felt his work on Earth was done. Mike was
there for me immediately. He was at the wake and the funeral, and
then, stayed by my side and helped with whatever I needed. He
cried for my husband just like I did.
I think that in this world where everyone is focused on the bottom
line, I saw what the Knights are truly about. They were there for
me when I needed them the most.

One Life
Lost. One Life continues. One chance to help. A strong shoulder there when she needs it the most.
The
choice of what happens after we're gone is ours.
When my life here ends, I want someone I know and trust to be there to
help my family, to console them, and, yes, to cry with them.
Your
Knights of Columbus agent will do that. The
man, and the organization, will be there for her. That's a
comfort that I can't get anywhere else.
If I
were you, I would call your agent today. I
stand shoulder to shoulder to help my Brother Knights. Memento
Mori -- Time flies, Remember death.
God
bless you,
Jim
